Command And Conquer Red Alert 3

It isn't that difficult to figure out the mental calculus that went into the design of Uprising, the single-player standalone expansion pack for Red Alert 3. RTS designers are often restricted when creating units by the need to balance them for both single-player and multiplayer gaming. That sometimes puts a crimp on creativity (though that'd be tough to say considering how wildly creative the original game was). Since most people who buy an RTS never go online, why not put out an expansion solely devoted to single-player and skirmish and let the designers go hog-wild, game balance be damned? Unfortunately Uprising is the answer. While it's certainly not a bad expansion, it misses out on a lot of what made the original so much fun.

The Red Alert series left the realm of realistic RTS games a long time ago in favor of a weird and hilarious parody zone of its own design. Uprising upholds this tradition with a group of wildly creative new units for each of the game's three sides that manage to out-bizarre anything in the original game. This is not an easy task when you consider that the original game sported parachuting armored bears, but the Russian bears in my heart have to move over to make room for the Mortar Cycle, a motorcycle with a sidecar carrying a little man throwing Molotov cocktails. The Cryotrooper is an Allied soldier that can freeze enemies and jump on them to shatter them. My favorite, though, is the Japanese Giga Fortress. This work of demented genius is a floating fortress shaped like a lotus flower that transforms into a giant floating samurai head that shoots a laser out of its open mouth.
Each of these units and the other new additions to the game's national arsenals is, bar none, an insane amount of fun to use. The game's design clearly reflects this, as three of the four new mini-campaigns were clearly designed to focus on the capabilities of the new units. That in itself makes them enjoyable, though not enough to make up for lackluster mission design and the lack of any sort of AI co-op. The lack of such co-op, a highly touted feature of the original game, is somewhat baffling. Even in a game without real co-op multiplayer, the original Red Alert 3 managed to throw some fun coordinated strategies into campaign maps by forcing the player to cooperate with a robotic general. Without it, what you have are fairly simple "build a big army and crush all opposition" strategies made even simpler by the sheer power of the game's new units.

The fourth new mini-campaign is a bit of a departure but comes as a fun and welcome change of pace. It follows the story of Yuriko Omega, the Japanese commando unit. Yuriko is apparently an Akira-like psychic schoolgirl taken as a child and experimented on by a crazy scientist. She escapes in the first mission by killing everyone in the research lab where she's held captive. Her three-mission sequence turns the game into a bit of a dungeon crawl in which the player controls Yuriko and her four basic abilities, a psychic scream, mind control, damage shield and telekinesis to wreak untold devastation. The sheer bloody mayhem and hilarious dialogue makes these three missions a highlight of Uprising, and the joy of picking up a piece of debris and throwing it into a gaggle of bowing scientists never gets old. It also presents quite a bit of challenge because while Yuriko is tough, she's not immortal, and all her abilities come with cooldown timers that make using them at the proper moment an important part of clearing the mission.
