Mortal Kombat 4

Mortal Kombat 4 is the fifth and final arcade game in the Mortal Kombat series of fighting video games. It was later ported to the PlayStation and Nintendo 64. An updated version titled Mortal Kombat Gold was released a year later exclusively for the Sega Dreamcast. It is one of the few 3D fighting games to have been described as having "2D gameplay."
Intro

The game's backstory is told in a 3-D cutscene by the thunder god, Raiden.
“ Thousands of years ago, in a battle with the fallen elder god known as Shinnok, I was responsible for the death of an entire civilization. To rid all realms of Shinnok's menace, I waged a war that plunged the Earth into centuries of darkness and banished Shinnok to a place called the Netherealm. Now after Shao Khan's defeat at the hands of Earth's warriors, Shinnok has managed to escape his confines in the Netherrealm. The war is now being fought once again, only this time it can be won by Mortals.
Gameplay

Early on, the development team at Midway decided to make a 3D Mortal Kombat to capitalize on the rising popularity of 3D games at the time. Midway decided to develop its own hardware, named "Zeus", from scratch, resulting in development delays (a large amount of the game was tested on two dimensional hardware using pre-rendered characters).
As revealed in later interviews, programmer and MK creator Ed Boon was particularly concerned with maintaining the gameplay feel of a 2D game but with 3D graphics. He at first was worried that there was some intrinsic property of 3D graphics that would make this impossible. Essentially, the major gameplay difference between 2D and 3D fighting games at the time was that up to that point all 3D fighting games had attempted to somewhat simulate realistic martial arts. One of the reasons this was done was to take advantage of the fluid keyframed and motion captured animation that was now possible using 3D models. For example, in Virtua Fighter, a real martial artist was filmed performing the moves, and this movement was imposed on the 3D model in the game. Thus, while a punch in a 2D game might be a rapidly responding move with two frames of animation, a punch in a 3D game might have a delay between when the button was pressed and when the opponent was hit, owing to the realistic animation.
This delay, as a result, fundamentally changed the gameplay experience. Boon eventually decided to use the non-realistic 2D rates of animation and movement, simply imposed onto 3D graphics. Thus the gameplay experience is nearly identical to the 2D versions of Mortal Kombat. While this was attempted before with the Street Fighter EX series, that series used more complex animation, which did change the gameplay somewhat. Some critics, however, were disappointed that Mortal Kombat 4 did not play like other popular 3D games of the time.

Choose from 15 characters, including the legendary Liu Kang and the mighty Scorpion, each with their own special moves and fatalities. Choose to fight in the single player campaign, complete with several difficulties and unique endings for each character. Take on a friend in the Multiplayer mode or see how long you can last in the Endurance mode.
If you aren't a fan of the previous Mortal Kombat games, this one will make you a fan. It's pretty much the same game but with a few 3D elements tossed in.

Command And Conquer Red Alert 3

It isn't that difficult to figure out the mental calculus that went into the design of Uprising, the single-player standalone expansion pack for Red Alert 3. RTS designers are often restricted when creating units by the need to balance them for both single-player and multiplayer gaming. That sometimes puts a crimp on creativity (though that'd be tough to say considering how wildly creative the original game was). Since most people who buy an RTS never go online, why not put out an expansion solely devoted to single-player and skirmish and let the designers go hog-wild, game balance be damned? Unfortunately Uprising is the answer. While it's certainly not a bad expansion, it misses out on a lot of what made the original so much fun.

The Red Alert series left the realm of realistic RTS games a long time ago in favor of a weird and hilarious parody zone of its own design. Uprising upholds this tradition with a group of wildly creative new units for each of the game's three sides that manage to out-bizarre anything in the original game. This is not an easy task when you consider that the original game sported parachuting armored bears, but the Russian bears in my heart have to move over to make room for the Mortar Cycle, a motorcycle with a sidecar carrying a little man throwing Molotov cocktails. The Cryotrooper is an Allied soldier that can freeze enemies and jump on them to shatter them. My favorite, though, is the Japanese Giga Fortress. This work of demented genius is a floating fortress shaped like a lotus flower that transforms into a giant floating samurai head that shoots a laser out of its open mouth.
Each of these units and the other new additions to the game's national arsenals is, bar none, an insane amount of fun to use. The game's design clearly reflects this, as three of the four new mini-campaigns were clearly designed to focus on the capabilities of the new units. That in itself makes them enjoyable, though not enough to make up for lackluster mission design and the lack of any sort of AI co-op. The lack of such co-op, a highly touted feature of the original game, is somewhat baffling. Even in a game without real co-op multiplayer, the original Red Alert 3 managed to throw some fun coordinated strategies into campaign maps by forcing the player to cooperate with a robotic general. Without it, what you have are fairly simple "build a big army and crush all opposition" strategies made even simpler by the sheer power of the game's new units.

The fourth new mini-campaign is a bit of a departure but comes as a fun and welcome change of pace. It follows the story of Yuriko Omega, the Japanese commando unit. Yuriko is apparently an Akira-like psychic schoolgirl taken as a child and experimented on by a crazy scientist. She escapes in the first mission by killing everyone in the research lab where she's held captive. Her three-mission sequence turns the game into a bit of a dungeon crawl in which the player controls Yuriko and her four basic abilities, a psychic scream, mind control, damage shield and telekinesis to wreak untold devastation. The sheer bloody mayhem and hilarious dialogue makes these three missions a highlight of Uprising, and the joy of picking up a piece of debris and throwing it into a gaggle of bowing scientists never gets old. It also presents quite a bit of challenge because while Yuriko is tough, she's not immortal, and all her abilities come with cooldown timers that make using them at the proper moment an important part of clearing the mission.

Install Notes

Tom Clancys Endwar (2009)

Tom Clancy's EndWar is a real-time strategy game created for consoles that has now found its way to the PC. How's that for a twist? With its innovative voice controls and strong production values, EndWar was an enjoyable experience on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, granting armchair commanders a sense of high-tech supremacy. Yet on a platform overflowing with quality RTS options, its core simplicity is far more obvious. Its three near-future factions all play the same way, the rock-paper-scissors relationships between units are incredibly straightforward, and the single-player campaign doesn't tell any story to speak of, which is a blatant missed opportunity. Nevertheless, a novel multiplayer mode and persistent units that carry from one mission to the next keep things interesting, and on the whole, EndWar is a mildly enjoyable game, even if it never feels like a comfortable fit on the PC.
